These two girls from Gloucester, England, are as close as twin sisters can be, yet in looks they couldn’t be more different. Maria has ebony, curly hair and dark skin, her sister, while her sister Lucy has red , straight hair and pale skin. “When we’ve met friends for the first time, they never believe we are twins, and they have even made us produce our birth certificates to prove that we are actually twins,” says Lucy.
It is not uncommon for siblings to take after a different parent to this extend. However, in a set of twins the chance of this happening is one in a million. The father of the twins, Vince, is Caucasian and their mother, Donna, is half Jamaican. When two separate eggs are fertilised by two different sperms at the same time, it can result in dizygotic or fraternal twins, as the genes which define the appearance of each child can be different. In this sense, these twins are similar to any other set of siblings, they just happen to have the same birthday.
